Pro Bono Legal Services

Provided by Access Pro Bono Society of British Columbia

Provides free and pro bono legal services to individuals throughout BC.
The following programs are offered:
  • Lawyer Referral Service: Helps British Columbians find a suitable legal professional to resolve their legal problem. Any BC resident can call 604-687-3221 to meet with a lawyer or a lower-cost articling clinician.
  • Residential Tenancy Program: Provides free legal assistance and representation to low and modest income tenants who are contending with tenancy law issues before the Residential Tenancy Branch. To see if you qualify for free legal assistance and representation services through the Residential Tenancy Program, email tenancylaw@accessprobono.ca.
  • Roster Program: Provides free legal representation services for particular case types to low and modest income individuals. Staff and volunteer coordinators screen client applications, and then send successful applications to a number of volunteer lawyers for their consideration. If a volunteer lawyer chooses to take on a particular case, they choose the scope of their services. Enquire about Roster Program services at roster@accessprobono.ca.
  • Solicitors' Program: Provides free legal help to BC-based charities and non-profit organizations of limited means. Staff receive requests from organizations throughout the province, and then do their best to match each request to a volunteer lawyer within workable reach. Enquire about Solicitors' Program services at roster@accessprobono.ca.
  • Summary Advice Program: Offers free legal advice to low and modest income individuals by telephone or videoconference (in person clinics are indefinitely suspended). Volunteer lawyers provide up to a half-hour of advice at each appointment, with the possibility of more appointments as needed. Volunteer lawyers provide free legal advice to low and modest income individuals on a full range of legal issues, including family, immigration, criminal, and civil law (such as debt, employment, welfare and housing matters). To book a clinic appointment, please call the Client Line at 604-878-7400 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM or from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday (excluding holidays). Alternatively, you can fill out an Online Triage Form.
  • Virtual Family Mediation Program: Offers free online family mediation and advice services to low and modest income families across BC. The program aims to facilitate early resolution of family law matters, while saving users' money and freeing up BC's court resources. To apply for the Virtual Family Mediation Program, email familymediation@accessprobono.ca.
  • Everyone Legal Clinic: Offers low-cost legal services to all British Columbians on a fixed-fee basis— in person or by virtual connection. Articling clinicians work under the supervision of practicing lawyers, and provide affordable help for family, tenancy/strata, employment, wills/estates, civil, corporate, consumer or criminal law issues. British Columbians can access Clinic legal services via its 24/7 online booking service or by calling (778) 200-4478 on weekdays between 9:30am and 4:30pm.
